Hengqin Mangzhou Wetland Park is located in the northwest of Hengqin New Area. Covering about 66 hectares, the park promotes ecological and wetland conservation and offers a wetland ecology exhibition, wetland leisure experience, seawall original ecological plant viewing and management service zones.
The park also has the first marine ecological restoration exhibition hall in Guangdong Province. The 2,000-square meter base is a venue for scientific and ecological education. With ocean, wetland and bird display sections, it showcases Hengqin’s achievements in restoring marine ecology.
The native wetland resources of Hengqin Mangzhou are very rich, with natural mangroves and large reeds. Mangrove plants come in six families, eight genera and eight species with Haimang, Kandelia, Haisang and Mouse being the most prolific. As a result of the environment, large numbers of birds inhabit the area. There are 62 species of birds, five of which are national key protected birds. It is not widely known that Hengqin is stationed on the migration path of migratory birds in East Asia and Australia.
The park is also home to a rare species of sea otter.
According to the Hengqin government, Phase 1 and 2 of Mangzhou Wetland Park, at a cost of about 150 million yuan, is now complete including the 2,000-square meter exhibition hall, 2.94 kilometers of ecological seawall and about 60 hectares of landscaping, mangrove forest planting and wetland dredging. The third phase is currently under way, with the final cost estimated at 500 million yuan. It will promote Hengqin New Area as a first-batch national marine ecological civilization demonstration site and ecological protection and construction demo area.
Hengqin Wetland is open to the public free of charge although there is no bus access yet so visitors will need to travel there by car or taxi.
