Australia’s Ashleigh Barty wins 2018 WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai in Hengqin

Australia’s Ashleigh Barty achieved the biggest win of the year after taking out the 2018 WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai at Hengqin International Tennis Center on Sunday.

Barty, who sensationally quit the sport of tennis in 2014 to spend time playing women’s cricket, defeated China’s Wang Qiang in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

The win completes a remarkable comeback season for the 22-year-old, who rocketed from No.325 to No.17 in the world to qualify for the tournament and will now end the year at No.15. Meanwhile, Wang’s performance will also see her break into the Top 20 for the first time.

Twin sisters Lyudmyla and Nadiia Kichenok won the doubles with a tight three-set victory over Shuko Aoyama and Lidziya Marozava.

As the year-end event on the WTA circuit, the Elite Trophy tournament featured 11 of the world’s top 20 singles players, plus one wild card, as well as six doubles pairs competing in round-robin formats at Hengqin International Tennis Center.

The event was organized by Huafa Group and operated by Huafa Sports.

“The WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai is an exciting event and has proven to be a great success in the development of tennis within the region,” said WTA CEO Steve Simon. “We are confident that the WTA Elite Trophy will continue to grow and play an integral part in promoting tennis in Asia.”
