The Zhuhai Huafa & CPAA Grand Theater is located in Shizimen Central Business District, facing Macau across the sea. It is part of the Zhuhai International Convention and Exhibition Center and is the first multi-purpose venue for performing arts that complies with international standards in Hengqin.
With investment from the Huafa Group for construction, the theater was designed by RMJM Architecture & Masterplanning. Müller-BBM of Munich, Germany, was responsible for the acoustics.
It has a floor space of 90,946 square meters of which 57,088 are underground and 33,858 are above ground. The theater adopts a postmodern style and is designed to look like a Persian harp standing in water. There is a modern theater hall and a classic and romantic Mozart concert hall, which share the same auditorium, plus two VIP rooms and passages.
The theater encompasses an opera and a concert hall, each of which contain nearly 2,000 seats. The facilities meet the requirements for opera, ballet, musicals, drama, traditional Chinese opera, variety shows and conferences.
The concert hall can accommodate medium-sized symphony orchestras, chamber music concerts and other classical music presentations. A German hand-made pipe organ embedded into the background wall on stage serves as both an instrument and as decoration.
Other facilities within the complex include a 200 square-meter professional recording studio, multi-function halls, a public hall, meeting rooms, VIP services, offices and service facilities.
The theater is operated by Zhuhai Huafa & CPAA Theater Management Co, a partnership between Huafa Group and the China Performing Arts Agency (CPAA). Founded in 1957, CPAA is the largest agency in China that represents Chinese performing arts, artists and stage productions for international tours as well as presenting the world’s distinguished artists and attractions in China.
