Maliuzhou Tunnel ready to open in Hengqin in October

Zhuhai’s first submerged tunnel will open to traffic in October, according to its builder – Zhuhai Da Heng Qin Investment.

Just a little more than four years since construction began in 2014, the Maliuzhou Tunnel will be six lanes wide and 2,834 meters long, running under the Maliuzhou Waterway. It will run along a yet-to-be-built road, Baozhong Road, to Nanwan Avenue in Wanzai.

The tunnel entry starts at Central Hengqin Avenue in Hengqin and extends northward to traverse North Ring Road, while from the Wanzai side the route runs under Gongbei to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.

A first-of-its-kind in Zhuhai, the project saw shield tunnel construction methods applied. The drilling process involved a “super-diameter machine” measuring 14.9 meters across and more than 100 meters in length.

In addition to riprap, rock stratum and drainage issues, engineers had to deal with excessive sediment caused by frequently changing seabed rock conditions.

The Maliuzhou Tunnel will be a passenger-vehicle-only channel used to alleviate traffic flow within Hengqin Island and will be the third paved connection to the New Area from downtown Zhuhai, joining the Hengqin and Second Hengqin bridges.
