Elite sport on show at Hengqin International Tennis Center

The Hengqin International Tennis Center was opened in September 2015 and is now home to two international tennis events each year.

The WTA Elite Trophy, held in November, is an end-of-season event featuring 12 of the world’s top female players including the 11 players ranked from 9th to 19th based on rankings at the time and one wildcard. The three winners since the event was first held in 2015 have been Venus Williams, Petra Kvitová and Julia Görges.

The Zhuhai Tennis Open, held each March, is part of the men’s ATP Challenger Tour and ITF Women’s Circuit. The women’s event has been held for the past four years and was won in 2018 by Maryna Zanevska of Belarus, while the men’s event began in 2016 and was won this year by Australian Alex Bolt.

Hengqin International Tennis Center took just 12 months to build and was designed by renowned architecture firm Populous, which also designed Wimbledon Centre Court and Margaret Court Arena at Melbourne Park.

Hengqin’s 5,000 seat center court forms part of the opening phase of construction, alongside a match court with seating for 1,500, four match courts with seating for 250 each and 12 training courts. The center has been designed as a green park for the community, providing a “raised forest” landscape to provide a lush environment which will be used by people during non-event days.
