Plan to expand Hengqin into Zhuhai’s new urban center ready for approval

The Municipal Urban & Rural Planning Commission has announced it is ready to submit its Integrated Development Plan for the merger of Hengqin New Area, Zhuhai Free Trade Zone and the neighboring Hongwan and Wanzai areas to the municipal government for approval.

The plan had been open for public review until 9 June.

The merged additional city core will cover 46.6 square kilometers. It comprises north Small Hengqin Mountain, north Shizimen Business District, Zhuhai Free Trade Zone, Zhuhai-Macau Cross-Border Industrial Zone, Hongwan Commercial & Logistics Center, Hongwan Port and Hongwan Fishing Harbor area.

According to the plan, there will be 15 primary schools, seven middle schools, five high schools, two comprehensive sports centers and one community sports park in the center. It will also boast five hospitals including two with Class-A facilities.

The integrated zone will deepen industrial cooperation between Zhuhai, Hong Kong, Macau and Shenzhen. It will remove space restraints on Hengqin’s development by regionalizing functional zones and creating an integrated layout. According to the Hengqin Government, the plan is to enhance cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, thus stimulating development in the western Greater Bay Area over the next two decades.
