Hengqin to play key role as Macau and Hong Kong CEs join first Greater Bay Area plenary meeting

The Chief Executive of Macau, Chui Sai On, and the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Carrie Lam, joined the first plenary meeting of the leading group for the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area held in Beijing on 15 August.

It is the first time that the Chief Executives of the two SARs have both been included in a working group formed by the Central Government.

The Greater Bay Area initiative was put forward by President Xi Jinping and demonstrates the Central Government’s interest in, and anticipation of, closer cooperation between Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

Hengqin will naturally perform a key role as the only Free Trade Zone connecting Hong Kong and Macau by land after the opening of the HZM Bridge.

The leading group convened its first meeting in the afternoon at the Great Hall of the People, chaired by Vice Premier Han Zheng.

The meeting reviewed documents concerning the promotion of closer exchanges between the mainland, Hong Kong and Macau and proposed support for the development of a global technology and innovation hub in the Greater Bay Area. Members of the leading group also shared their views on how to press ahead with the next phase of work for the Greater Bay Area.

During the meeting, the Central Government expressed support for the development of Macau as a platform of traditional Chinese medicine with modern technology. Hengqin’s Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Industrial Park of Co-operation between Guangdong and Macao, co-funded by the Macau and Zhuhai governments, will play a key role.
