Demacia Cup 2018 rocks Hengqin

After four days of fierce competition, the Demacia Cup 2018 came to its exciting conclusion on 3 June at Hengqin International Tennis Center, with Chinese team Royal Never Give Up edging out Bilibili Gaming 3-1 to lift the trophy.

The teams competed in the world’s most popular eSports title, League of Legends (LoL) – a fast-paced, competitive video game that blends the speed and intensity of real time action with role playing. LoL was developed and published by Riot Games in 2009 and is distributed in China by Tencent Inc.

The Demacia Cup is one of the biggest domestic events in League of Legends outside of the LoL Championship Series. More than 10,000 eSports fans traveled to the Zhuhai stop.

Featured were the top three teams from the west and east divisions of the LoL Pro League: RNG, Invictus Gaming, Edward Gaming, Snake, Rogue Warriors and BLG. TyLoo and ShadowCream, champions and runners-up of the LoL Development League, also participated.

Tencent, one of the world’s largest mobile gaming developers, earlier this year proposed an eSports City Development Plan in cooperation with the Zhuhai government to promote eSports in the region. Tencent eSports has since allocated a special fund and resources to bolster boutique eSports events. The Demacia Cup 2018 is the first step in the development plan.

With the central government’s support, China is now the largest gaming market in the world with a thriving eSports scene that brought in over US$100 million in revenue last year, according to market research firm Newzoo.
