Hengqin International Tennis Center

Hengqin International Tennis Center is an international standard tennis facility and the only world-class venue for tennis in Zhuhai and Hengqin.

It is the first Centre Court built in China to have a roof and still be recognized as an outdoor tennis court, protecting players and spectators from the elements.

Opened in September 2015, it took just 12 months to build and was designed by renowned architecture firm Populous, which also designed Wimbledon Centre Court and Margaret Court Arena at Melbourne Park.

The first stage includes a center court with 5,000 seats, a match court with seating for 1,500, four match courts with 250 seats each and 12 training courts.

Stage two of the project, which saw construction begin in late 2016, includes a 15,000 seat tennis arena, indoor training hall, athletes’ apartments, a tennis museum and additional match courts.

Hengqin International Tennis Centre is operated by Huafa Sports, part of Huafa Group, and is home to the WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai, Zhuhai Open, Australian Open Asia Pacific Wildcard Playoff, as well as a variety of amateur tennis challenge events every year.

The WTA Elite Trophy, held each November, is an end-of-season event featuring 12 of the world’s top female players including the 11 players ranked from 9th to 19th based on rankings at the time and one wildcard. The three winners since the event was first held in 2015 have been Venus Williams, Petra Kvitová and Julia Görges.

The Zhuhai Tennis Open, held each March, is part of the men’s ATP Challenger Tour and ITF Women’s Circuit. The women’s event has been held for the past four years and was won in 2018 by Maryna Zanevska of Belarus, while the men’s event began in 2016 and was won this year by Australian Alex Bolt.

The Australian Open Asia-Pacific Wildcard Play-off, first held in November 2017, provides players from the Asia-Pacific region with the opportunity to win a wildcard into the Australian Open. One wildcard each is given to the winners of the Australian Open Wildcard Playoff to gain direct entry into the Australia Open in January.

The center has been designed as a green park for the community, with a “raised forest” landscape to provide a lush environment for the everyday enjoyment of citizens and visitors during non-event days.
