Forbidden City Gallery opens in Hengqin

The Forbidden City Gallery has opened its Hengqin branch at Xiangzhou Port Culture Block in Hengqin.

The Gallery has been designated a contemporary cultural and art space by the Palace Museum in Beijing, and its Hengqin branch is expected to spread traditional Chinese culture to the Greater Bay Area, according to a spokesperson at the opening.

Founded in 1925, the Palace Museum is housed in the Forbidden City, an imperial palace of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties of China. Its vast holdings of imperial artwork and artifacts make it the most prestigious museum in China.

The new gallery will hold art exhibitions, organize highly interactive lectures and display publications of the Palace Museum along with cultural and creative products.

Shan Jixiang, Director of the Palace Museum, provided a lecture on opening day, kicking off the gallery’s “Hengqin Lecture Series.”
