Zhuhai to build "Bridge Economic Zone"

Hengqin New Area and the Zhuhai Free Trade Zone in Wanzai will become integrated as a new city center in the next five to 10 years, spearheading in-depth cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau.

According to the Zhuhai government, the “Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Economic Zone” will cover a total of nearly 26 square kilometers, equivalent to one-fourth of Hengqin.

The aim is to further promote in-depth cooperation in Hong Kong and Macau, the appropriate diversification of Macau’s economy and the effective interconnection of Hong Kong’s resources so as to build the economic zone into an economic resource center for Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau. It will serve as an important platform for further cooperation between the three and will further develop into a new city center in Zhuhai.

To achieve that goal, nine major projects are to be built in Zhuhai. In addition to the Shizimen, Jiangjun Mt, and Da Heng Qin Mt tunnels, pilot projects will include Sponge City in Hengqin, Urban Garden, China Railway Construction Corp (CRCC) Square, South China headquarters of China Everbright Ltd, Hengqin Tianmu Qintai (a landscape and business complex project) and Hengqin Science Town.

The “Bridge Economic Zone” will cover three areas – Hengqin Free Trade Zone, focusing on the development of leisure travel, financial services, business services, cultural and creative high-tech industries; Zhuhai Free Trade Zone, focusing on the development of international trade, warehousing and logistics, cross-border e-commerce, information services, advanced manufacturing and strengthening of urban integrated service functions; and Hongwan Area, including Cross Gate North Area and Hongwan District, Hongwan Customs Clearance Center, Hongwan Trade and Logistics Center and more.
